Maintaining Sanity Safari Beta 3 & SafariSource
Apr 15

Since most of my time is spent designing and I leave the Flash mastery to those much better suited than I, I find myself spending very little time dealing with actionscript and keyframes - however this weekend a project slid across my plate that needed to be taken care of and I noticed with alarm that I was no longer able to hear sound either from my exported .swf files, nor within the Flash application itself.

After a bit of searching I found a workaround, and although I’m fairly certain this is old news, I thought a re-post of some handy information wouldn’t hurt anybody (especially since this issue doesn’t appear to have been resolved yet).

From Mac OS X Hints:

I’m not sure if this problem is exclusive to Intel Macintoshes, but I first noticed it after an iTunes update; my Flash plugin had completely lost its sound.Luckily, I found an extremely strange but workable fix in the Macromedia forums — but you need GarageBand in order to implement it. Open GarageBand, and do something that generates music - I opened the piano keyboard and played a couple notes from the Star Wars theme. Quit. You’ve most likely now got your Flash sound back. Why this fix works, I have absolutely no idea. I imagine GarageBand might be doing something behind the scenes, but this has to be one of the more odd fixes I’ve ever run across. (But one of the most difficult fixes to find - thus the post here.)

Thanks WCityMike!

Yep, I’ve had to use that one from time to time as well. It hasn’t happened for a long time though–maybe you should confirm you have the latest flash player…

Also, I couldn’t help but notice that you mentioned me, though not by name (”those much better suited than I”).

Another quick note… This workaround also fixes audio problems with certain web-based mpg/mpeg files and audio alerts in Microsoft Messenger.
